Bouldering and Climbing Wall at Peter Ashley Activity Centres Portsmouth
Public Bouldering at Fort Purbrook! Bouldering is a simple and social form of climbing without ropes or harnesses.

Our purpose-built indoor bouldering rooms provide the ideal opportunity to develop co-ordination, stamina and determination, whilst learning basic climbing skills and techniques.

The Boulder Room is a total of 700 square feet of quality bouldering underground! Its features include 45 degree panels, two waves, slabs, cracks, arêtes and an eight-foot roof section. This was originally built by Bendcrete in 1992 and has since undergone upgrades and new routes are added frequently.

The Training Room is a total of 700 square feet of climbing area. Its features include a 5 sided 16-foot tower, curved wall, roof sections, chimney and overhangs.

Whether you have never bouldered before or you are a seasoned pro, you will find something to try and enjoy in the Cellers of Fort Purbrook.

Public Access Prices:
Adults: £7.50  | Concessions: £6.50
Under 18s: 5.50

Concessions are: Over 60s, Students, Military and NHS all with proof of ID

Membership (per month)
Juniors/Seniors: £18.50  |  Concessions: £27.00
Adults: £36.00

  • All users over the age of 18 must fill in a registration form before climbing.
  • Under 18’s must be supervised closely by a registered adult at all times.

You’ve probably got some questions. Hopefully, we’ve answered them below.

Do I need to pre-book?

Not anymore, but it is a good idea to call ahead or check our Facebook page here for info on wall closures.

What gear do I need?

Bouldering is the most stripped-back version of climbing – all you need is a decent pair of well fitting shoes. Of course if you want to get in to it properly then all you really need is a pair of sticky rubber climbing shoes and some chalk.

Do you offer coaching?

We certainly do! Each activity comes with a one-2-one coaching option or a two-2-one coaching option. Please specify when booking as this effects the price of the activity.

Can I come bouldering by myself?

Yes! Climbing is a very social activity, and you’ll meet lots of people to climb with once you’re here

Bouldering General Safety
  • Report to reception on each visit before you climb.
  • You must exercise care, common sense and self preservation at all times.
  • Report any problems with the walls, equipment or other climbers’ behaviour to a member of staff immediately.
  • Be aware of the other climbers around you and how your actions will affect them.
  • Do not distract people while they are climbing.
  • Always climb within your capabilities and descend by down climbing or a controlled low level jump.
  • Never climb directly above or below another climber.
  • Don’t sit or stand under the wall when people are bouldering.
  • Problems finish on the last obvious hold. DO NOT grab or touch the top of the wall, or any girders, metalwork or lights.
  • Don’t boulder with hardware hanging on your clothes or chalk bag.
  • Keep the mat free of objects and obstructions like bags, clothing, chalk bags, brushes, shoes etc. No food or drink on the mats.
  • THE SOFT MAT DOES NOT MAKE BOULDERING ANY SAFER
